EdReady English (Grades 10-12)

About This Course

NROC’s EdReady English is designed to help students meet basic college entrance requirements. This program integrates and reinforces the standard developmental English curriculum -- reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary building, and grammar skills -- to fully prepare students for credit-bearing courses. EdReady English permits students to self-assess for mastery of grade-level knowledge and skills and readiness their next level of study toward college English readiness. EdReady uses diagnostic testing to establish personalized study paths to fill in learning gaps and to reinforce understanding. Each EdReady English goal contains between 14-29 learning topics. As students demonstrate mastery of each skill and learning topic in their study path, they see their goal score increase as evidence of progress toward their target score of 100. Course Objectives:

• Students will apply many different reading strategies to determine word meaning in a text, identify various literary elements, determine main vs. supporting details, and author’s purpose.
• Students will demonstrate the ability to read critically through identifying cause and effect, logical fallacies, determine bias, and determine credible sources in texts.
• Students will demonstrate an understanding of the writing process including the ability to write an appropriate thesis statement, edit and revise their own writing for interest and clarity.
• Students will utilize various sentence structures in their writing as well as include appropriate transitional phrases and patterns in their writing.
• Students will demonstrate use of appropriate grammar and mechanics in their writing.

Unit 5: Analysis Through Definition (18 Reading, Writing, and Grammar objectives)

Unit 6: Learning Across Disciplines (11 Reading, Writing, and Grammar objectives)

Unit 7: Exploring Comparative Elements (17 Reading, Writing, and Grammar objectives)

Unit 8: Informed Opinions Through Causal Chains (9 Reading, Writing, and Grammar objectives)

Unit 9: Applied Critical Analysis (14 Reading, Writing, and Grammar objectives)

Unit 10: Using Sources in Critical Reading and Writing (14 Reading, Writing, and Grammar objectives)

Resources Included: All content materials are included, though it is recommended that students have access to paper and pencils while completing work online.

Scoring System: This course does not produce a final score within the Student Learning Portal. All scoring is kept within the individual student's EdReady dashboard. Students can track their progress over time, starting from their initial goal score set by a diagnostic test. This score increases toward a target score of 100, indicating mastery has been demonstrated for all skills contained within the goal's scope of study.

Time Commitment: EdReady English courses are for personalized enrichment or remediation. They do not follow a standardized pacing guide and may vary greatly in the length of time required for individual students to complete the content. Year round courses are open entry, in that students may start on any date during the Year Round session. However, there is an defined end date and students do NOT have a full calendar "year" to work on courses. Students must finish all Year Round courses by the session end date in mid-August.

Academic Support Available: N/A - EdReady English is a content-only online English skills program that can be used in local educational programs to support Tier 1 blended learning environments or to support Tier 2 or Tier 3 systems of support for English interventions and progress monitoring. Enrollment in EdReady English is NOT accompanied by the support of an online instructor. Required Assessment: Each EdReady English Goal added by the student to his/her dashboard will require completion of a diagnostic test that will serve as the basis to establish a personalized study path for each student. Thereafter, students will complete short assessments for each lesson skill not yet mastered.

Technical Skills Needed: No special skills are required beyond being able to operate a computer and use word processing software.

Additional Information: This is not an instructor-led course. Registration for EdReady requires the use of a valid email address. Students will receive a registration confirmation email containing instructions on how to create an account on the Michigan Virtual EdReady website and a Goal Key specific to the school year and grade level or subject area associated with this SLP registration.
